Update on Amendments to this Site
To save time for viewers returning to this site, I have developed
this "Updates" page to help me (and anyone else) to keep track of
the changes that I make to pages contained on the site. If you are a new viewer
to the site, then past changes will be of no interest to you, and I suggest
you proceed straight to the "Introduction"
page and go from there.

E.W.C. Sandes D.S.O., M.C., R.E. (Ret.) published by The Institution of Royal
Engineers, Chatham, 1948 added. These breifly
mention actions that involved H.E.M. Newman in the North West Frontier area
(now N.W. Pakistan) in 1937. The similiarities with what has been going on
recently in adjacent Afghanistan are quite evident. Links to this document
are provided on H.E.M..Newman's page and on
his 1930's page. Mention of it has also been
included in a footnote in H.E.M. Newman's
memoirs.

- Sadly recording the death of Oliver
Suffield - lovely man and one of my favourite relatives. Regrettably I
met only twice in my life, once in 1956 when I was a boy of 10 and then in
2001 when I was a bit older. His visit in 1956 driving an immaculate MG TD
did a lot to inspire my love for old cars, but the beautiful vintage Bentley
that he owned for 40+ years was something that I could only aspire to. I will
miss him.

- New page added for Joseph
Jekyll with links from relevant pages
- New page added describing "Hawkridge
and Withypool" where Joseph Jekyll, Rowland Newman and Rowland
Alan Webb Newman were rectors. (The information was previously on Rowland's
page)
- New page added for George
Jekyll (Joseph's father).
10th February 2005
- New page for Edwin
Henry Armstrong Newman, after discovery of 1871
and 1881 census records that show
him as the son of old Edwin's eldest son
Edwin Newman, who I had previously
assumed to have been EHA Newman. This page now includes the obituary to
E.H.A. Newman which I had previously presumed to have been wrong because
none of the dates or data made sense! Further information added from 1901 census.
- Revision of Edwin
Newman's page (elder son of 'old Edwin'
who I had previously recorded as EHA Newman), incorporating information
from 1871 and 1881
censuses. Also recording details from 1871
census.
- Revision to Walter Newman's,
his wife Emma's, and his daughter Evelyn's
pages with data from the 1881 census.
- Update to Joseph
Newman's page, recording details from 1871
census.
- Update to Rowland Newman's page, recording details from
1871 census.
- Addition of Mary
Ann Rhodes née Nelson to the website with information kindly
sent to me by Debbie Hill (further updates expected soon).
- Updates to Robert
Kilpatrick Wake's page with data from 1881
and 1891 censuses.
- Minor updates Adah Rhodes
Nelson's page; also to her daughter's Adah
Elizabeth Aitken Wake and Mary Helena Nelson
née Nelson's pages, with information from 1871,
1881 and 1891
censuses.
- Further corrections to Francis
Newman's page - however this page is now going to have to be rewritten
to make sense of all the information that I have about him.
- Updates to the Index of
Names to incorporate recently created entries, and also to list the
"other pages"
which cover subjects other than individual people.

23 January 2005
- Charles Dagenais's name corrected on Francis Newman's
page. Charles is the genealogist in Paris who researched the details surrounding
the French period of Francis Newman's eventful life.
12 January 2005: modifications
as follows:
- A new "Information
Exchange" page has been added to allow people who are seeking
information about their Newman (or related) family histories to seek help
from other viewers of this website. The page is accessible from a link
at the bottom of the main index (on the left of the screen).
- Further information provided about the short life of
William Paynter who was drowned at sea
in 1888, kindly sent to me by Ray
Farnsworth (owner of the old Paynter home at Freelands, Alnwick,).
- Richard Newman
of Evercreech's page updated with a correction
of the date of burial of two infants, Grace and Henry Newman, who were
probably children of Richard (see bottom of page). Thanks to Dick Newman
for pointing out the error.
8th January 2005: Information
about Mary Ann Rhodes Nelson,
sister of Adah Rhodes Wake (née
Nelson), added to Adah's page (information sent to me by Mary's g-g-granddaughter
Debbie Hill).
10 December 2004: Several updates
summarized as follows:
- Richard Newman
of Horsington including a photograph of Gould's
House where he used to live, and a brief description of its current occupants:
Christopher Maltin whose company Organic
Power Ltd has developed a new form of organic waste digestion system
and a vehicle engine to burn methane in place of petrol; and his wife Susan Moore,
a genealogical researcher who has done work for me and who has just published
a book on research using Chancery Proceedings;
- The Newman Street page
has been updated with new information coming from Campbell Newman in Australia;
- Thomas Newman
of Fifehead's page has a corrected version of
the Latin inscription inside the Fifehead chapel (from a new photograph
taken by myself in Oct 2004). Interestingly, the date of his death is shown
as 1649 and not 1602 as quoted in John
Hutchin's History of Dorset;
- Richard Newman
of Fifehead's page also has a corrected version
of the Latin inscription inside the Fifehead chapel (from a new photograph
taken by myself in Oct 2004);
- The Fifehead page has been
updated with the above inscription corrections. Also, several photos of Fifehead Manor House have been
included (thanks to local resident, Peter Mera). [Note - this house was
built in 1807, some years after the Newmans sold the Fifehead estate];
- The Brent Knoll page has
been updated with a new section
describing the church where my parent's funeral services were held, and
which houses a plaque in memory of my step-mother Babs (d.1979);
- A new page has been added titled "Easter
Rising in South Brent" with a link from the section on Brent Knoll
church. The new page incorporates the text of a short history of the Civil
War as it affected the village people, written in 1980 by Peter Synge,
one-time resident of Brent Knoll. Links are added to another page
relating to the Civil War in the West Country, describing the role of Sir Ralph Hopton, builder of Evercreech Park House;
- Reginald Hearle
Paynter's page updated with a note relating to
Harold Barkworth & Julia Traill Sandbach (his son's parents-in-law),
thanks to Eric Percival (see www.eric.percival.dsl.pipex.com for further info).
- Rowland Newman's page has been updated with a link to a new
page, telling a fascinating story of an illegitimate child called Bertie Thomas whose high-born parents left
him with a washerwoman who lived at Withypool (Somerset). His foster-mother
subsequently placed Bertie's papers into the safekeeping of Rowland
Newman, vicar of Hawkridge and Withypool. His grandson, John Thomas,
is appealing for help in tracing his grandfather's parents, and since I
recall reading the story once before (I don't remember where or when) I
thought I would post it onto this website on the off-chance that it reaches
someone who knows the answer to the riddle.
11th October 2004: An additional
note added to Henrietta Newman's page
confirming that at least 9 months elapsed between her wedding and the birth
of her first child! The mystery remains as to why she and her new husband
were sent off to Alnwick, so far from their homes, to have their children
and live their lives.
1st August 2004: Updated information
about Anne Toll (née Newman) sent
to me by her descendent Ken Toll. Updates include an estimate of her birth
year and the year of her marriage and alternative spellings of her name.
A minor update has also been made to Edwin Henry
Armstrong Newman's page in which reference is made to information about
him on the LDS (Latter Day Saints) website.
12th Jan 2004: Updated transcription
of the text of the contract
for the purchase of Evercreech Park has been added, thanks to Raymond Mercier. Raymond has also sent
me a transcription of the Will
of "Richard Newman the Younger" which I have added to the
site. I have many more Will transcriptions from Raymond, awaiting my attention
whenever I can get time to add them as well.
7th Jan 2004: Updates to pages
for Thomas Newman of Fifehead
and his son Richard Newman of
Fifehead. To these pages I have added the names of Robert
and John Newman,
both sons of Thomas, who were discovered for me by Raymond
Mercier. Raymond has sent me a vast collection of Newman and related
Wills, including those of Robert and John Newman (and Frances
Newman as mentioned in my 5th Dec 2003 update), and I plan to incorporate
copies of these into these pages as and when time permits.
5th Dec 2003: My recent visit
to the UK where I visited two of the old Newman houses (Cadbury Court and
Evercreech Park) has rekindled my interest in genealogy which had flagged
over the last 12 months. However my most recent flurry of genealogical activity
has been the result of my discovery of Campbell Newman's website at http://www.angelfire.com/mac/cambel/500_hist/geneal_10_newman.html
. Campbell and I share a common ancestor in Edwin
Newman of Yeovil. However his family has been resident in Australia
for some three generations which is (naturally) where his website tends
to focus its attention. Nevertheless, some of his information about the
older generations of the family is of immense interest to me and I have
quoted freely from his text in several of the modified pages listed below.
In addition, Raymond Mercier has provided me with a vast
amount of new information, including a CD full of Wills (many of which he
has transcribed) only one of which I have so far had time to incorporate
in these pages.
I summarize the extensive changes that I have recently
made as follows:
New pages added as follows:
- Fifehead-Monuments - a transcription of the text from "Historical Monuments
in the County of Dorset" kindly sent to me by Peter Mera, Secretary
of the Village Hall at Fifehead. The text describes various "monuments"
in the village of Fifehead including the Church (and Newman chapel) and
the Fifehead House which already been demolished at the time of writing.
- Fifehead-in-the-1840s - a transcription of the text of a paper called "Fifehead
Revisited" presented by Peter Oxlade in 1988. This was also kindly
sent to me by Peter Mera, Secretary of the Village Hall at Fifehead. The
text sets out to describe what the village was like in the 1840s but includes
a lot of historical perspectives going back to the 16th century and beyond.
- Thornbury-Park - Photos of the house only at this stage, copied from "a
Family History of Ashburnham Cecil Newman and his many descendants"
by Geoffrey Newman. I will add more information later
- Old-Palace-Yard - a map and brief explanation as provided to me by Raymond Mercier
relating to Westminster properties once owned by the Newman family.
- Richard-Newman-1675-Indenture - a copy and transcript of what appears to be some form of lease
agreement (or indenture) whereby Col. Richard Newman, for the sum of five
shillings, passed over the rights and income from Evercreech Park and other
nearby lands to four gentlemen for a 12 month period. I have no idea why
he did this, but the names of two of the gentlemen mentioned in the agreement
suggest that it was an amicable arrangement.
- Evercreech-Purchase-Contract - a copy and transcript of the agreement whereby Richard Newman
of Westminster purchased Evercreech Park from Messrs John Tretheroy and
John Caryll in 1657. Which Richard Newman signed it?
- Frances-Newman - a new page dedicated to Frances, sister and heiress of Sir
Samwell Newman's fortune.
- Frances-Newman's-Will - transcription of the 20+ page Will left by Frances Newman,
kindly sent to me by Raymond Mercier.
Page modifications as follows:
12th Nov 2003
- Change to Hendford Manor
page to clarify some details of the other Newman family living in Hendford
at the time of the 1851 census (thanks to Sandra
Beckett of the Newman Name Society). The question still remains: were these
Newmans related to the Newmans at Hendford Manor?
10th Nov 2003
- New page added showing some census
records for Yeovil in the years 1851, 1881 and 1891, also a letter
from Somerset Records Office which accompanies the census records.
- Changes to Hendford Manor
page including references to the census records (above), and the existence
of a Jane Newman
plus several relatives living at 80 Hendford in 1851. Who was she?
- Addition to Edwin Newman's
page speculating whether the record of his younger brother Henry Brown
Newman is correct. Was he in fact Henry Bennett?
- Minor changes to James
Bernard Paynter's page with links to the Yeovil censor records.
- Minor changes to George
Henry Newman's page confirming that it was his daughter Charlotte who
was in Yeovil at the time of the 1881 census.
6th Nov 2003
- Updated speculations included on the Sparkford
page about the possible location of Sparkford Manor, including photos
of Manor Farm.
3rd Nov 2003
- Several minor additions and corrections made based mainly
on information given to me by Sam Miller, antiquarian of North Cadbury,
who gave me a list of Newman baptisms and burials at North Cadbury Church.
The names of these I have listed on the Cadbury
page of this website, which I have also updated extensively.
2nd Nov 2003
- Copy of
a 1675 lease made by Col. Richard Newman (itself
a copy made in 1779) added with a link from Col
Richard's page. The document was given to me by the current owners
of Evercreech Park Farm. I have made a transcription
of the text as best I can (but will be grateful for corrections of any
errors that I've made).
30th Oct 2003
- Changes made to the pages for Richard
Newman of Evercreech and for Evercreech
Park. Updates include information about a plaque found by Di Clements
in Evercreech church, and photos taken by myself when I visited Evercreech
Park Farm in September 2003.
2nd May 2003
28th April 2003
- New photo of Patricia Newman (née
Feaver) added to her page. Thanks to Mike Bown.
25th April 2003
- Revisions to the Sparkford Manor page in which I conclude
that there was never a "Sparkford Manor" per se, but more likely
that the not insubstantial Sparkford Farm was the manor (with a small 'm')
owned by the Newman.
- Francis Newman's page and that of his uncle Francis
of North Cadbury updated with minor corrections and additional Chancery
Proceedings.
23rd April 2003
- New photo of Patricia Newman (née
Feaver) added to her page. Thanks to Mike Bown.

to Di Clements)
- A newspaper cutting sent to me by Jack Paynter added to Jum
Paynter's page, celebrating his son Henry's 96th birthday and his achievement
at becoming the world's oldest Badminton player!
5th Feb 2003
29th Jan 2003
- New pages for kings William
I and Henry I, plus changes to their
parents',wives' and offspring's pages.

on the left side of the screen). This enables users of the site to search
for words or phrases within this website.
9th Jan 2003
30th Dec 2002:
- Photo added to Lilian
Jekyll Newman (née Paynter) showing silver salver wedding gift
given to her by the Shillbottle miners.
28th Dec 2002:
- New page added, being a reproduction
of a letter from Wayne Newman (from Wellington, New Zealand) to the Newman
Name Society's April 1998 issue of "The Newman Chronicle" (Page
2412) and a response by the then Editor, Tony
Newman. Sadly, neither Wayne nor Tony have been able to establish their
own connections to the Fifehead Newmans, however between them they present
an extraordinary amount of information (and informed comment) about the family.
I am indebted to both Wayne and Tony for giving me permission to reproduce
their writings on this website, and in due course (as time permits), I will
copy much of their information into the relevant pages presented on this site.
- Note added about Edward
Bernard Coleman from information sent to me by his great grand-daughter
Helen Tamara Proctor.
26th Dec 2002:
29th Oct 2002:
- New address registered www.newman-family-tree.net with
123-reg. The old website address http://www.geocities.com/lao_ke/ has outgrown the space
available at Yahoo-Geocities. However, I will keep its existing pages updated
for the time being, but I do not expect to be able to expand it any further
to incorporate new pages.
20th Oct 2002:
- New page created for Richard
Newman of Horsington, discovered by historian/researcher Susan
Moore. It seems that Richard and his brother Thomas were previously unrecorded
sons of Francis Holles Newman. Susan Moore discovered their existence through
a record of a Chancery Court
proceeding dated 23 Nov 1742. The record also indicates that their mother,
Eleanor (née Mompesson) died after the proceedings began in 1740 and
before the case was heard in 1742.
19th Oct 2002:
17th Oct 2002:
- New information about Francis
Paynter sent to me by the Royal Institute of Cornwall, indicating that
(a) his marriage to Catherine Augusta Coleman was his second marriage,
and (b) he was bankrupted in 1849.
22nd Sep 2002:
- Revisions to Edwin
Sandys Newman's page with references to church inscriptions at Babcary
as provided by Ian Caldwell.
- Edwin Sandy's mother and Henry
Newman's wife identified as Ann Underwood (also by Ian Caldwell)
24th Aug 2002:
- Revisions to Patricia Newman's
page incorporating information provided by her son George.
14th Aug 2002:
- A very interesting and enlightening account of the English
Civil War has been added on a separate page dedicated to Sir Ralph Hopton who led the Royalist forces in the West
of England, and who also happened to be the owner of Evercreech Park estate
before it was owned by the Newmans. This story was kindly sent to me by
Mark Hopton, a descendent
of Sir Ralph.

to the Australian descendents of Arthur Newman
with information kindly supplied to me by Tony Newman.

25th July 2002:
23rd July 2002:
- Copy of Edwin's
will added, with links from Edwin's and some of his sons' pages.

St. Leger's page, and font size reduced in several pages linked to
hers.
- New page added for Eleanor-Mompesson
with revisions to her husband's page.
21st July:
- My new contact details added: please note my email address
is now gts@a1.com.au .
- Notes added relating to Emma Montague
Browne.
- A new page has also been added showing a purported Newman Pedigree with a bit
of Jekyll history, that was passed to me by my father - much of which appears
to be wrong!
20th July 2002:
18th July 2002:
17th July 2002:
16th July 2002:
- Joseph Jekyll Newman - Note added relating to Edwin Newman's will (which arrived in
the mail today 16th July). Several related amendments will follow.
- Henrietta Paynter (née
Newman) - photos of her grave added (kindly sent
to me by Ray Farnsworth).
- Anne Newman - new information arrived from Raymond Mercier - a descendent
of Anne. Welcome, Raymond!
15th July 2002:
- I have began reducing font and table sizes used in all
pages, to make them easier to see on low-resolution screens. I designed
all the pages on my laptop and they look fine on its large high-resolution
screen. I only recently discovered how awful the pages can look on smaller
low resolution screens. This is a big job that will take some time to complete.
Earlier in July 2002:
- Francis Newman - a very interesting update based on information provided by
Cliff Ranson, a descendent of Francis. Welcome, Cliff! There must be much
more to be written about Francis, and Cliff has promised to fill in some
of the missing details in due course.
- Col Richard
Newman - Jerry Gandolfo (USA) has given me a large
collection of information about the family which I have only just begun
to transcribe into my tree. One bit that I have copied so far is the story
of the Battle of Worcester and Richard Newman's involvement in it. Thanks
Jerry.
- Sir Richard
Newman and Sir
Samwell Newman - On my recent visit to England I called in to Fifehead
and took some more photos inside the church. Two of these are of the busts
of Sir Richard and Sir Samwell, which I have included in their respective
pages.
- Fifehead
- I've included verbatim translations of the two Latin inscriptions inside
the Fifehead church that were kindly provided to me by Jerry Gandolfo;
(thanks Jerry). Also two photos that I took of the tomb of Thomas Newman
Gent who I believe was the eldest son of Thomas Newman of Fifehead.
I'm sure there are lots more changes that I made around
this time, but these are the ones I can remember.
Future Updates: Scott Nourse
has written in with a bunch of information about William
Gregory and Elizabeth Geers from
whom he is descended. I will be working through this as soon as I can. Raymond
Mercier has also sent a bundle of information about Newmans in Canada descended
from Anne Newman which is going to take some
time to work through.
Jerry Gandolfo has a lot more information about his relatives
in the USA and I have suggested to him that he compose new pages for them
himself, either for me to incorporate onto this site, or for him to post
on a new website of his own. Cliff Ranson has also offered to pass on information
to me about another US branch of the family, and about Francis
Newman from whom they all descend.
I have been in contact with Tony
Newman who has a lot of information about the Newmans of Fifehead posted
on Ancestry.com. Unfortunately, Tony hasn't yet been able
to trace his own links back to the Newmans of Fifehead, but has developed
an interest in them nonetheless. He mentions the existence of an Irish branch
of the family, but I don't yet know where the connection is.
